As they pass through a blower wheel or brush against coil fins at high velocity, they act abrasively, gradually wearing surfaces that need to stay smooth and precisely shaped to move air efficiently.

The dry air compounds the problem in a way most homeowners never consider. In humid climates, condensation forms on evaporator coils during a cooling cycle and acts as a passive cleaning mechanism, washing light dust off the fin surfaces. When a heavy haboob hits, filters can reach full impaction within hours, and air takes the path of least resistance: around the filter media and directly into the duct interior. That bypass event can load the duct system with particulate in a single storm that would otherwise take a full season to accumulate.

The national standard of replacing filters every 60 to 90 days is calibrated for moderate climates. In the Coachella Valley, checking filters every two to three weeks during heavy use periods is more appropriate, and checking within 24 hours after any significant haboob is a reasonable precaution, not an overreaction.

What Accumulates Inside Your Ducts After a Full Summer

Most valley HVAC systems run near-continuously from late May through September. That isn’t seasonal use; it’s months of nearly uninterrupted cycling, each cycle pulling particulate through the duct network and depositing a fraction of it on interior surfaces. By the time temperatures finally drop in October, ducts reflect an entire season of concentrated use.

That buildup has a measurable effect on airflow. Dust deposits narrow the effective cross-section of each duct run, raising static pressure, the resistance the blower motor must overcome to push air through the system. Higher static pressure means the motor draws more power to move the same volume of air, and that inefficiency compounds across months of extended summer runtime. It shows up on the electricity bill before it shows up as an obvious mechanical failure.

Attic-run ductwork faces an additional vulnerability specific to this climate. Attic temperatures in Palm Desert regularly exceed 140 degrees Fahrenheit during summer. The efficiency loss doesn’t feel like a breakdown. When a clogged filter is left in place too long, the coil coating process accelerates sharply. Dust bypasses the filter media and reaches the evaporator coil directly in large quantities. Beyond the filter, the question is what the ductwork has accumulated over the summer. NADCA, the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, recommends professional duct cleaning every three to five years as a general baseline, a guideline calibrated for moderate climates. The end of the cooling season is the logical time to assess because it represents the highest accumulation point of the year.
